The 21-year-old missed Wimbledon last year through injury and hated coming along in a commercial capacity
has only played six matches at the All England Club, but will probably be the most followed woman in the postcode when she returns to Wimbledon for the first time since 2022 on Monday. No one could have predicted that becoming international fame a few weeks later when she won the US Open, nor the rollercoaster ride that has followed in the three years hence.
She “rekindled her love” for tennis during a two-month break from competition, which included the controversial decision to skip the French Open. She is, as she wrote on a camera this week, doing things at “my own pace”. “I think we understand each other. Not many people do understand the way that I think. So it’s good how we can actually be on the same page in a lot of conversations.”For some tennis fans, those who only really watching during the Wimbledon fortnight, this is the first time they will have seen Raducanu for the best part of two years. They will remember the highs and lows of Wimbledon 2021, the earth-shattering achievement in New York, and then an injury-plagued period since.
Those moments of happiness have been few and far between, and as recently as April she described feeling “mentally and emotionally exhausted” by life on tour. But she is reinvigorated by time away from the match court, some of which has been spent with Fran Jones, the British No 7, who joins her in the Wimbledon draw this week and who recognises a new lightness to her friend.“As players we carry a lot of weight throughout the year and it’s important to understand how to balance that.
