🟢 Emma Raducanu is trialling another new coach as she prepares for Australian Open

She made her breakthrough at Wimbledon a few months before under the stewardship of Nigel Sears, before Andrew Richardson guided Raducanu to her historic grand slam. He was subsequently replaced by Torben Beltz shortly afterwards, while the LTA’s head of women’s tennis Iain Bates and senior performance adviser Louis Cayer have also played significant roles in her development.

Raducanu will head to the southern hemisphere later this month to play a warm-up tournament in Auckland before arriving in Melbourne for the Australian Open, the first grand slam of the year, which starts on 16 January. It would be unfair to characterise Raducanu’s approach to coaches as “hire ’em and fire ’em”, even though on the face of it, it would be easy to do so. She has, after all, had her fair share of different advisers over her brief professional career.

One well-placed source believes it is a culture clash as much as anything else. Raducanu comes from an unconventional background – few players even finish school, let alone with A-levels in maths and economics – and did not play a huge amount of junior tennis, meaning she does not have much shared experience with the majority of coaches on the tour.

And these stints with different coaches are not in vain either. Tursunov said there were “red flags” that made him walk away from the Raducanu job but also that there was a lot of talent there and that they had made some progress in their time together. It also seems that there is a “type” emerging: Tursunov was immediately snapped up by Bencic, Sachs’ former charge, to suggest that the two coaches share some similarities in style.

Each new coach brings fresh perspective, fresh information and a fresh approach. So too will Sachs. For how long remains a mystery.
