Explore the real-life locations that once served as the backdrop for the beloved British soap opera, Emmerdale. Discover the history of Esholt village, its connection to the show, and the reasons behind its eventual departure from the filming landscape.
Though no actors or camera crew have set foot in Esholt for nearly three decades, it still draws crowds of television enthusiasts. The village's stone cottages, shops, and local farms evoke the iconic setting of the long-running soap opera Emmerdale . The local pub on Main Street, originally called The Commercial, was famously renamed The Woolpack after its owner grew weary of constantly changing the signs.
Visitors to The Woolpack can enjoy a dog-friendly atmosphere, hearty pub fare, and signed photos of Emmerdale cast and crew. Home Farm, currently owned by the Tate family in the show, was based on the real Home Farm on the Esholt Estate, dating back to 1691. The row of six cottages on Bunkers Hill served as the filming location for Demdyke Row. Emmerdale stopped using Esholt as a filming location in 1993 following a fictional plane crash that destroyed the houses. The crew had to be meticulous in avoiding Bunkers Hill from appearing in the background of other scenes. Kate Whitham, who lived in Esholt during the 90s, recalled the dramatic filming experience: 'They brought the power lines down in the village, and there was rubble everywhere, like a disaster movie. The windows of our house were blown out – it was so dramatic.' Another location used for exterior shots was Lindley Farm, a few miles from Esholt. The real-life owner of Lindley Farm eventually refused further filming after becoming exasperated with tourists trespassing on their property. As Emmerdale's popularity soared, so did the number of fans eager to visit the filming location. Constant coach trips to Esholt disrupted filming, leading to difficulties for the cast. Joining the cast as Mandy Dingle, explained: 'We couldn't film because of the noise, it would be like 'and action.... waaahhh' a babies crying, so I think after a while they realised that the only thing we could do would be to build our own village.' In 1997, the soap opera moved to the Harewood set, a replica village with a few minor alterations.
