From the streets surrounding Harpurhey Park, they came in their droves to remember him. Nathaniel Shani, 14, died after being fatally stabbed in an incident on Tavistock Square, just a few hundred yards away, last Friday . A 14-year-old boy has been charged with his murder.
Afterwards, lots of people were visibly emotional, in tears and consoling each other as the balloons floated away and the sombre applause came to an end. The event was the idea of young people and was organised the help of youth workers at three organisations that have been doing support work in the area. Chris Macintosh, from one of those, YPAC, said: "Young people here have shown an amazing amount of resilience and compassion, all the way through the week.
"I have read so many of the messages about him, about how polite he was and how he made people smile and laugh. It's just a horrendous tragedy. I can see people are in shock. Yet the one thing that has brought everyone together is the sense of north Manchester community.
