UT says its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion had to close under Texas SB 17 which prohibits DEI offices and programs at public colleges and universities in the state. The bill's author-- State Senator Brandon Creighton from outside Houston tells us it's the right move. Those in favor of the ban have called DEI a "woke" program that promotes "critical race theory" on college campuses. But opponents of SB 17 call that a false narrative and insist DEI programs are about helping students of varied backgrounds achieve their dream of a college education. Mulvey explains, “They help veterans, they help students with disabilities, first generation students. They help all students of color. They help all sorts of students.
