The Port of Newcastle has paid $13 million so that it is no longer prohibited from competing with the Port of Botany and can diversify away from coal.
Just over a decade ago, when the NSW Coalition government decided to privatise the ports, it included a secret non-compete clause that gave Port Botany a monopoly on container shipping.
Carmody said coal was 92 per cent of the company’s current business, but major export customers such as Japan, Korea and China were rapidly phasing out coal and the market could die within about a decade. He said the exports could bypass Sydney altogether, while some imports would need to be trucked to Sydney but would redistribute the traffic.“If trucks that were going to go to Botany can now go to Newcastle, it just follows, as a matter of course, that there’ll be less congestion on the Sydney roads; that’s just blindingly obvious,” Sims said.
Carmody said he would not speak on behalf of his coal clients, but his view was that people had a right to protest as long as they did it safely.
