Endometriosis was first named in 1921, but more than a century on it still takes an average of 7.5 years to be diagnosed

Endometriosis was first named as a condition in 1921 when American gynaecologist John A Sampson published a paper following observations of several patients with non-cancerous “chocolate cysts” in the reproductive system. He went on to investigate the condition in 293 patients, increasing knowledge and understanding in the medical community.

He observed that the “chocolate cysts” were seen in affluent and ambitious women who put off childbearing and that the cysts disappeared during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Today, endometriosis affects one in 10 women in the UK, and roughly 190 million women and girls of reproductive age globally, according to theIt is estimated that 60 to 70 per cent of those with endometriosis can get pregnant spontaneously, but the links between the condition and fertility are not fully known due to a lack of research, according to Endometriosis UK.

She added: “For endometriosis, doctors need to change the way they interact with their female patients so that they take them seriously for the very first time they come in.A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care said women’s health has been pushed to the “top of the agenda” with the Women’s Health Strategy for England and the first-ever Women’s Health Ambassador.
