Energi Generation's application to build a 99.9-megawatt battery storage facility on a former coal mine site near Padiham has been rejected by Burnley Council due to its impact on protected Green Belt land. The company plans to appeal the decision, citing the project's benefits for clean energy and its potential to become operational quickly.
The firm behind a plan to create a battery storage site on 8.5 acres of field on the Burnley and Ribble Valley border is to appeal its refusal by councillors. Energi Generation wants to build the 99.9-megawatt facility on the former open-cast coal mine site north of the A6068 in Padiham, near Dean Brook.
A spokesman for Lancashire-based Energi Generation said after Thursday’s meeting: “We will be appealing this decision. Energi Generation are extremely disappointed with the council’s refusal of the battery storage planning application at Padiham. “It is particularly notable no statutory consultees raised objections to the application and only nine local objections were raised which bizarrely were not shared with Energi until the council announced their intention to refuse the scheme.
