Hundreds of armed police raced to Weberstrasse in Gelsenkirchen after a brawl saw tables and chairs thrown during a running battle between England and Serbia fans.
A violent clash erupted between England and Serbia supporters this afternoon in Gelsenkirchen, ahead of their Euro 2024 match in the city this evening. Dozens of riot police were scrambled to Weberstrasse following a fracas that saw pub furniture being hurled.
An onlooker said: "It was a nasty but small fight. But it ended up with a chase before the police finally calmed it." The city's cops said that the individual threatened officers and, after refusing to relinquish the explosive, he was shot in the leg. The confrontation happened close to the fan zone in the St Pauli area, roughly two-and-a-half hours before the Netherlands squared off against Poland at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion.
Top news stories today "This prevented further attacks and no emergency services or other bystanders were injured. The police officers immediately provided first aid, which was continued a short time later by medical personnel. The man is currently receiving further care in a hospital."
