England launched their Vitality Netball Nations Cup campaign with a commanding 62-36 victory against Malawi on the opening day. The world number 4 ranked England showcased a spirited performance, with player of the match Paige Reed making a memorable impact on her debut by scoring the opening goal.
While Malawi, ranked seventh globally, had never defeated England in their 14 previous encounters, they challenged the hosts closely in the initial two quarters, occasionally capitalising on England's defensive lapses. England's captain, Fran Williams, entered the game at the start of the second half, injecting much-needed pace and experience into the team. Reed received support from Emma Thacker, who made her debut after Olivia Tchine sustained an ankle twist early in the third quarter.
