Today Stojkovic has done something unprecedented by leading Serbia to the Euros. They have played at three World Cups this century but their last Euros appearance was in 2000, playing as Yugoslavia in tandem with Montenegro. And a coach, no less, who once embodied the old notion of Yugoslavian footballers as the “Brazilians of Europe”.
Whether Serbian talent will be enough in Germany is a moot point. Although Stojkovic recently extended his contract, the optimism of earlier in his reign – generated by wins in Portugal to qualify for Qatar 2022 and in Norway to reach the top tier of the Nations League – has diminished.
