The addition of Stokes ahead of the Cricket World Cup is a huge boost to England’s hopes of retaining the title won on home soil in 2019

Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, has already stated he is willing to take a chance on Archer’s fitness in the hope he will be ready to play at the sharp end of the World Cup. But Atkinson’s inclusion in this squad gives England another out-and-out pace option alongside Mark Wood.

Brook’s absence is more eyebrow-raising given he is expected to play a major role in the World Cup. Despite his heavy workload in his first year of international cricket, resting the country’s most explosive young batter for an ODI series where England will be fine-tuning their preparations for the World Cup would be curious.

Brook is named in the 15-man squad for the T20 series against New Zealand that begins at Durham on 30 August. Stokes, whose innings in the final against Pakistan in Melbourne last November helped England win the T20 World Cup, has been rested for that series as England look to manage the knee injury that affected him so acutely during this summer’s Ashes series.

Atkinson is also in the squad for that four-match T20 series against the Black Caps, along with leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, Josh Tongue, the fast bowler who impressed in two Tests against Ireland and Australia at Lord’s this summer, and the uncapped Hampshire fast bowler John Turner.
