With the match in the balance on the third morning, an incredible display of irresponsible English batting gifted Australia the ascendancy and again raised questions about the validity of the host's tactical approach.
It's a reflex action, something that can't be helped no matter one's allegiances or relative youth.
When reflecting on how England went from 1-188 on day two to now trailing by 221 runs, it's hard to emphasise enough just how self-inflicted this wound was. It's also worth pointing out that Brook had made 50 by that point, and England was still right in the game. He clearly has an incredible eye and an abundance of talent. Brook's record early in his career is something to behold.
There's a danger in dismissing this English ethos at this stage because there is still so much of this match and series remaining. England bowled well, far better than it did on day one. Australia battled admirably but was unable to score at the sort of pace that could have broken the back of its opponent.
