The Leicester Tigers forward has made a full recovery from an ankle injury and now has the chance to make his World Cup dream a reality
“There were times when I didn’t think I’d be fit and ready so it was an emotional day and I was lucky enough to have my mum out there and caught up with her after the game.
“She had actually still gone out and watched that [Six Nations] game, so to be back there at the same stadium, playing in front of her, was pretty special.” Chessum, who turns 23 on Wednesday, was pleased with his first contribution – shooting out of the line for a big tackle on full-back Hugo Keenan –. He has quickly become a key figure for England with his ability to lock both sides of the scrum or occupy the blindside flank.
Interestingly for those who wonder how fully fit a player can ever be, Chessum says of his ankle: “I can play rugby, but the likelihood is for the next maybe year, two years – I don’t really know, I have never done anything like this before – the physios say it is by no means I am out of the woods. “I need to look after it. Whereas before I would just stick the boots on and train, now I’ve got 20 or 30 minutes prehab and warming up and exercise to make sure my ankle is in a good position to go out and train.”
