English Heritage, facing financial pressures due to the pandemic's impact and rising costs, is proposing significant restructuring measures, including up to 200 job cuts and limited access to certain sites. The organization emphasizes its commitment to minimizing redundancies and retaining expert staff while ensuring its long-term financial sustainability.

English Heritage , the leading organization responsible for preserving and protecting England's historic sites, is facing financial challenges and is proposing significant restructuring measures. These measures include up to 200 job cuts , which would affect at least seven percent of the charity's workforce, with curators being particularly vulnerable.

Additionally, 22 locations will be reclassified as 'hidden gems,' opening only on select days, while another 21 sites will be closed for the winter season. These changes are being driven by a combination of factors, including the lasting impacts of the pandemic on visitor behavior and expectations, the rising cost of living, and increased inflation, which has significantly raised the cost of conservation work. The planned restructuring has sparked concern among staff and trade unions. Steve Thomas, Deputy General Secretary of Prospect, expressed worries about the future of both employees and the historic sites they safeguard. He emphasized that the skilled and dedicated staff are the heart of the organization and losing their expertise would be detrimental to preserving England's heritage. Fran Heathcote, the General Secretary of PCS, pledged to protect the jobs and livelihoods of their members, recognizing their crucial role in preserving English history. In response to these concerns, an English Heritage spokesperson outlined the necessity for organizational adaptation. They acknowledged the world's dramatic changes since the last structural review, particularly the pandemic's impact on visitor patterns and the financial pressures faced by both the organization and its members. They emphasized the need to ensure the charity's financial sustainability and ability to fulfill its charitable purposes. While acknowledging the difficult situation, the spokesperson assured that the organization is committed to working with employees and trade unions to minimize redundancies and retain a team of over 75 expert curators, historians, and conservators
