“We could not be more clear that Greater Manchester is the right place to put down roots”

The English National Opera has today confirmed the first wave of plans for its new ‘major’ partnership with Greater Manchester.

It came after bosses at the organisation campaigned against a decision by Arts Council England to slash its funding unless it moved out of London. News that the ENO would be moving to Manchester was met with fury in some quarters, but the organisation’s bosses said a mooted move to Manchester was 'just not doable'.

Spanning the entire city-region, the programme for the next three years will also see a new partnership with Lowry in Salford. ENO’s production of Benjamin Britten’s opera Albert Herring, performed with the Orchestra of English National Opera, will open at the Salford Quays venue in October 2025. As part of the commitment to the region, there will also be the creation of a Greater Manchester Youth Opera Company in partnership with Greater Manchester and Blackburn with Darwen Music Hub. Working with young people aged 13-19 from backgrounds underrepresented and underserved in the arts, ENO will work with the Royal Northern College of Music and a range of partners to pilot the project from September 2025.

Other strings to the plans include a new learning and participant department expanding the national free music making programme ‘Finish This’, along with vocal and training opportunities in opera for young people living in the region. A collaboration with The University of Manchester will see the arrival of ENO discussed, with talks taking into consideration the opportunities this also presents.

"We've been really excited for what ENO's partnership with Manchester and the wider city-region is going to bring and this first wave of project and programme announcements sound amazing with opportunities across the board for learning and for skills development within our communities, as well as for audiences. It's exactly what we were hoping for from the partnership and we can't wait to see how this develops and where our collaboration takes us in the future.
