Yeah, these guys will both be over 30, but you’re hoping they buy you some time for Roby and Hence, and shopping at the back end of the market won’t get you strikeouts and threatens to give you a rotation full of No. 4s. Is this Imanga/Gray outcome likely? I don’t know, but they do seem more like what the Cardinals have done in the past than predicting that they shop at the top of the market and give someone likedefense is the worst I’ve ever seen, and the metrics back that observation up.

By some of the older-school metrics like Ultimate Zone Rating, these Red Sox aren’t one of the top 50 worst defensive teams since 2000. But Outs Above Average, which hasn’t been around as long, has them as the third-worst since 2015, behind only the 2022 Nationals and the 2017 Mets, so there is a case that this is one of the worst defensive teams of recent times.
