A seven-foot swearing monster follows an alcoholic, manic father as he searches 80s New York for his missing son
It seems all our best homegrown TV writers are jumping the BBC ship in favour of American streamers and their deep pockets. First,), a depressed, alcoholic son of a property magnate who has made his own living and found fame as the creator of children’s TV puppet show,Vincent’s married to Cassie , who is at her wits end with their expletive-laden arguments and having an affair with a nicer, calmer man.
But after a particularly vicious argument between Vincent and Cassie, Edgar sets off for school and never returns. Soon, missing persons detective Michael Ledroit is on the streets hunting down clues to what happened to Edgar and uncovering New York’s seedy underbelly in the process.isn’t that simple. The backdrop of the city’s homelessness problem, rampant racism, the Aids epidemic and corrupt cops all get a look in as Ledroit and Vincent attempt to track down Edgar with increasing desperation.
Eric helps Vincent on his quest to find his son, but he’s also a malevolent presence. He voices Vincent’s most self-destructive thoughts about being a terrible father, and when he really reaches rock bottom , Eric even turns violent. The puppet feels a little gimmicky, and curiously inconsequential to the overarching story, but he’s an arresting visual guide to Vincent’s volatile mood – the more Eric appears, the deeper the puppeteer is in his psychosis.
