The peaceful oasis near Mawdesley has seen its fair share of drama
More than 20 metres below the surface of Eccleston Delph lies a children's playground, armoured personnel carriers and an aeroplane. With several cars and a speedboat which once belonged to comedians Dudley Moore and Peter Cook, the disused quarry is a playground for divers to explore.
As divers Jeff Ashcroft and Ian Reading made their way to the waters edge they made the grim discovery that was to link the secluded location to an international crime ring. These days the site is considerably more tranquil and is a haven for wildlife and outdoor swimmers. The on-site dive shop sells an array of equipment for divers and swimmers and there are facilities to hire equipment and maintain kit.
On Tuesday evenings, the air is filled with the smell of exhausts and the roar of engines as bikers gather from miles around.
