Erik ten Hag insists there is no issue between him and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane amid the centre-half's curious lack of playing time. Varane has started in only one of United's last seven games and Ten Hag selected the 35-year-old Jonny Evans over Varane against Sheffield United, Manchester City, Fulham and Copenhagen.
However, Varane cannot even be certain of starting against Luton Town this weekend in the absence of the injured Evans. Varane and Harry Maguire have only started alongside each other twice this season and Victor Lindelof is also available. “What I said last year, Harry didn’t play a lot, so I was very happy with Rapha’s performances. I have always been happy with his performance. But in this moment, Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition."
"Because I think Licha, obviously, Luke Shaw, obviously, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are right-footed, but they can play really comfortably with their left and make the right angles. Then you can construct a better formation where you can start to play.”
