Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag could decide to experiment in a bid to solve the club's current midfield troubles.
With just over a week of the summer transfer window to go, Manchester United face a race against time to strengthen their midfield options.
Even if Mount had been fit and available, United would have still needed to sign another midfielder, such was the lack of support and protection Casemiro received against Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur. Mount was too high to engage in defensive duties.United, of course, are considering a late swoop for Bayern Munich ace Ryan Gravenberch, though he is not an out-and-out defensive-midfielder. Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat, who is more aligned with the aforementioned role, is also on their radar.
Therefore, in a bid to tighten things up in midfield and provide Casemiro with some defensive support, Ten Hag could try an experiment that he has never conducted during his Old Trafford premiership so far by bringing Lisandro Martinez into midfield. The full-blooded and committed Argentine has the ball-playing capabilities to push into midfield and both defend and pick a pass slightly higher than his usual station.
Though United may refrain from deploying Martinez as a No.6 against Forest as a result of being at home and being favourites to win, moving him into midfield may be something Ten Hag is forced to consider when the Reds travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal eight days later, presuming they are unable to add to their midfield before the deadline two days earlier.
