Andre Onana has failed to impress in his first few months at Man United and has a fellow summer arrival waiting on the bench if needed.
Erik ten Hag showed his ruthlessness when he showed David de Gea through the door in the summer. The goalkeeper had been at Manchester United for 12 years but made one too many mistakes last season to warrant a new deal. He wasn’t the only shot-stopper to leave.
It must be said the Italian club’s path to the final was considerably easier than Manchester City’s but he nevertheless kept eight clean sheets en route. So far, he has kept just three in nine United games. De Gea had kept five in the same period last season and supporters cannot be argued with for wondering whether Onana is an upgrade.
Gary Neville has often touted that the goalkeeper position at United is the hardest job in world football, and right now the shirt is weighing heavy on Onana, because that is not his first error since arriving. That will have crashed again in midweek. However, Ten Hag is not about to drop his new No.1. Speaking after the defeat to Galatasaray, he said: “I have to talk with more players, but I also have to talk with Andre of course. I will do and I will back him, because he’s a great goalkeeper.”
