Man Utd have had a poor start to the season and part of the problem is key players who are underperforming.
The reasons for Manchester United’s drop-off from last season to this are manifold, which makes fixing them particularly difficult for Erik ten Hag. From a major injury crisis to a squad yet to get to grips with tactical changes, it’s been a case of almost anything that can go wrong doing so, both on and off the pitch.
It was Casemiro’s transformative presence as a player in midfield and has a demanding serial winner, as well as Rashford’s stunning goal return that helped to propel United to third in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup. Repeating that success this season would always depend on those two maintaining those standards.
Casemiro has looked slow and sluggish all season and will be fortunate to keep his place ahead of Sofyan Amrabat or even Scott McTominay. The 31-year-old has struggled in both Champions League games, in which United have conceded seven goals in two matches, and found it difficult to stop Tottenham’s surging momentum earlier in the season.
When United opted to sign Hojlund this summer, it increased the pressure on Rashford to match last season’s tally. So far the Dane has done what was expected ahead of him. He’s had some impressive games and then some games where he’s been relatively quiet. When that happens, Rashford has to step up. "We supported him where we could with the way of play, but also in his mental mindset," said Ten Hag.
