Formby Beach offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holidays. This beautiful beach boasts golden sands, snow-dusted dunes, and a charming pine forest perfect for a refreshing winter walk.
It can be easy to while away the days between Christmas and the New Year by lounging around on the sofa, tucking into selection boxes and watching yet another festive film. But it’s also rather nice to peel yourself away from the TV, pop on the big coat and step outside into the crisp winter air. A good walk can blow the cobwebs away following the Christmas celebrations and leaves you feeling refreshed for the new year ahead.
It’s also a time to make the most of the beautiful winter scenery we have right on our doorstep, especially if it’s frosty outside. If you’re looking to shake up your winter walk over the festive season, then consider a trip to the seaside. You might think beaches are just for the summer, but there’s a certain charm to the coast on a crisp winter’s day - plus you miss the crowds of the summer months. Formby Beach is a great place to visit at this time of year. Known for its natural beauty, the beach is the perfect antidote to busy festive gatherings and heated games of Monopoly. Owned by the National Trust, Formby Beach boasts a wonderful stretch of golden sand and on a clear day you can see as far as the Cumbrian mountains. The beach is backed by acres of sand dunes, which take on a magical appearance when dusted by snow. If the bracing coastal breezes become too much, seek shelter in the gorgeous pine forest which sits beside the beach. Explore the different trails which weave through the trees which tower overhead. The pine woods are home to rare red squirrels, so keep your eyes peeled for these iconic creatures as you make your way through the woods. There aren’t any cafes at Formby so it’s a good idea to bring along a flask of something warm and maybe a leftover mince pie or several to munch on. Formby Beach is completely free to visit and there is a car park operated by the National Trust
