Esme McLinden was given the chance to tour the laboratories at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary
A Lockerbie teenager has been given an insight into the behind-the-scenes medical work relating to her healthcare treatment.She and her parents were curious to know where her blood samples go and how they are analysed.
They were offered the chance to find out during their visit to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary when they were given a tour of the medical laboratories. It was part of an initiative under the philosophy of the charity Harvey’s Gang which is aimed at helping children understand where samples go, how they are processed and, above all, why it is important for blood samples to be taken in the first place.
And it has helped give the family peace of mind and a better understanding of how the hospital teams are working to help the brave young lady. Paediatric nurse Sharron McGarva, who joined them on the tour, said: “As Esme had had her infusion the day before, we were able to make a film of her blood sample for her to look at down the microscope.“On the day, we played Eye Spy around the lab, did colour changing experiments and learned about plasma and blood products in bloodSharron said: “Esme was also our first child to receive Harvey the bear, who is so cute and cuddly.
