Social media footage shows massive tailbacks ahead of passport control in the Port of Dover, after a 'critical incident' was declared over long delays for holidaymakers on their way to Europe.
The government has asked Brussels to loosen the rules on border fingerprint checks amid fears it will cause travel chaos for British tourists entering Europe next summer.
In a statement to the Commons, Seema Malhotra, the immigration minister, said the Government was lobbying the European Commission for extended emergency measures to allow French border officers to fast-track travellers during peak times. Queues build at Dover, 3.6million cars hit the road and Eurostars are still axed 'We believe that extending these beyond six months would improve throughput at the EU's external border if queues form during peak periods in early 2025 due to the additional processing time required for EES,' said Malhotra.
'Insufficient progress has been made on ensuring that these impacts are minimised – with disruption likely when the scheme is introduced,' she said. French border guards can currently only operate in the eastern docks, but the under the new legislation, they will be able to operate in the western docks where there will be specific facilities in place to deal with coach travellers.
