Record flooding and devastating wildfires in central Europe have led to the EU's Crisis Management Commissioner issuing an urgent warning.
Deadly Portugal wildfires have led to the popular tourist destination declaring a "state of calamity", with over 100 fires stretching thousands of firefighters to the limit in the north of the country - which have killed six people so far.
Portugal have asked the EU to send more fire-fighting planes to help put out the numerous blazes. Houses have been burned on the edge of the town of Albergaria-a-Velha and more than 800 firefighters are battling fires in the Aveiro district. In addition, at least 21 people have died in flooding in Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Austria in recent days after Storm Boris brought huge amounts of rain and snow at the weekend. Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia are still on high alert with more heavy rain forecast, which is threatening to push the River Danube's water levels up yet again.
“Europe is the fastest warming continent globally and is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events like the one we are discussing today. We could not return to a safer past,” he added.
