Defining the News
Twenty three Filipino seafarers were among those rescued by a European Union naval mission from a Greek-flagged oil tanker, MT Sounion, following an attack in the Red Sea near Yemen, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.Yemen’s Houthi rebels are suspected to be behind the assault. The Houthis have increasingly targeted international vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden as part of their broader campaign to support Hamas in its conflict with Israel.
The shipowner of the MT Sounion is among those affected by this policy, with the DMW now considering expanding the restriction to include six additional shipowners. The Department of Foreign Affairs has warned Filipino seafarers and the public about the heightened risks associated with navigating the Red Sea.
As a result, the DFA is urging Filipino seafarers to carefully consider their safety when making decisions about sailing through these waters.
