The EU is expected to thwart any expectations Ukraine has that it will be able to quickly join the EU at a key summit this week
top officials will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday for an historic summit, but their message of solidarity will come with a warning that the war-torn country should not bank on a fast-track entry into the club.
The message about managing expectations will be carefully gauged so that Ukraine is praised and encouraged for its progress in, while also incentivised to go keep the pace up during the long and arduous negotiations that lie ahead. A draft statement for the event does not mention Ukraine’s hoped-for 2026 timeline and instead signals that Kyiv needs to meet the same key markers as all prospective members.
