All 27 countries would have to agree a delay

has reminded Parliament that all 27 member states need to agree before Britain can delay Brexit.Theresa May will have to ask the EU for permission to delay the scheduled departure date – which is just 15 days away.Reacting to the latest round of votes, the EU Commission said it will ‘take note’ of tonight’s decision in the Commons, but that any extension will require the unanimous agreement of all EU nations.

‘It will be for the European Council to consider such a request, giving priority to the need to ensure the functioning of the EU institutions and taking into account the reasons for and duration of a possible extension,’ they said. Shortly after the vote, the EU Commission’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier tweeted that a meeting with Romanian PM Viorica Dancila had been ‘calm and respectful of UK parliamentary procedures’.‘Determined to defend EU interests and to build an ambitious EU/UK future relation as soon as possible,’ he added.

Hilary Benn, chairman of Brexit committee, told metro.co.uk: ‘I hope the EU will grant the extension and I think they will want a longer than shorter extension and that will be up to the Government to sort out with the EU. ‘Though my amendment was defeated by two votes there will be another chance to vote on this again this week. The Commons has now said we will not leave without a deal, the Prime Minister has to respect that, either we are a parliamentary democracy or not.’
