A man attacked fans and officials 'with a gold-colored axe' ahead of the European Championship game, German newspaper Bild reported.
German police have shot a man who was armed with an axe in Hamburg on Sunday, according to local law enforcement, ahead of Poland facing the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 match.Hamburg Police said they had launched a 'major police operation' after a person wielding a pickaxe and an 'incendiary device' threatened police officers.Law enforcement 'used their firearms,' the police said in a statement.
Around 40,000 fans had gathered for a Dutch fan march ahead of the match between the Netherlands and Poland, scheduled to take place from 3 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to Bild. The Group D game will take place at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion stadium.The attacker wielded a 'gold-colored axe' in the middle of the fan march, the newspaper reported.
