Real Sociedad and Midtjylland will face off while AZ Alkmaar will play Galatasaray in the Europa League play-off round for the right to play either Manchester United or Tottenham in the last 16 after the draw was made on Friday. All three British clubs - including Rangers - are through to the round of 16 after finishing in the top eight of the Europa League group phase, meaning the trio have not learned anything more about their fate.
However, the teams needing a play-off to reach the last 16 now know who could await them in the next round. Porto, who scraped through to the play-offs on Thursday, must overcome Roma in what is the standout tie, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce host Anderlecht. From this point, the path to the final in Bilbao will become a lot clearer. There will then be a draw straight after to determine home advantage in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Due to the structure of the draw, Spurs and Manchester United cannot meet until the final. Draw format - how it workedTeams finishing between ninth and 16th in the league are seeded for the play-off round. They will face an unseeded team that finished between 17th and 24th in the table - with the seeded team also having the benefit of playing the second leg at home. Sides have been paired together in the draw, meaning the two sides who finished ninth and 10th have been drawn against either the 23rd or 24th-placed sides. Teams who finished 11th and 12th have been drawn against either the 21st or 22nd-placed sides, and so on. The eight winners from the play-offs will meet the teams who finished in the top eight from the initial league phase in the last 16, where the familiar theme of knockout rounds will run all the way to the final.
