Evacuation order lifted after freight train derails in Matteson, Illinois
MATTESON, Ill. — Evacuation orders have been lifted after a freight train derailed in Matteson, Illinois, on Thursday morning, as crews worked to determine if hazardous materials had leaked from the train. According to Matteson police, the derailment involving a Candian National Railway train happened around 10:30 a.m. A spokesperson for the railway said there were about 25 railcars carrying various substances that derailed.
Residents were originally advised to plan for a 'long-term evacuation' and to 'take any medication and supplies' they may need. The areas included:Main Street from the tracks south to Sauk Trail 218th Street and 218th PlaceCharles StreetVillage officials said the order also included areas one mile south of Main Street and 217th Street, one mile west of Main Street, and a quarter-mile east of Main Street.
