Lightning has been the source of most of the fires in Alaska, which have burned nearly 180,000 acres this year. There were another 1,300 strikes in the state on Wednesday.
Homes near the Globe Fire, a native allotment, and a DOT work camp are threatened as winds spread fire. ANCHORAGE , Alaska - People along the Elliott Highway from mileposts 41 to 43 are being told to “Evacuate Now” by the BLM and Alaska Fire Service. They say the Globe Fire is rapidly spreading, now moving toward the highway. They say nearby homes, native allotment, and a DOT work camp are threatened. Six smoke jumpers were deployed on the fire when the wind shifted east Wednesday evening.
GO! Elliott Highway MP 41-43 EVACUATE NOW! The BLM Alaska Fire Service says the Globe Rire is rapidly spreading, now...The globe fire was first reported on June 25th. The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center Situation Report listed the fire as caused by lightning, first detected by civilian aircraft. The estimated size was reported at 1,312 acres as of Wednesday evening.
The wildfire season is in full force across Alaska. As of Wednesday evening, 132 active fires are burning in the state, 31 new in the past 24 hours. The state is currently staffing 14 fires where more than 300 fire fighting personnel are assigned. High pressure is the source of our heat and dry weather, and a ridge that stretches across the state will continue to keep much of the state dry and warmer than normal through the weekend.
This means temperatures will stay above normal, especially for the Interior and Slope, with dry weather continuing. Anchorage’s first chance at rain is Monday, but the moisture is light, and will not likely be enough to reduce the fire danger.
