Even whales in the deepest parts of the ocean, many miles from the nearest town or city, are under threat from humans,are being affected by 14 different human activities – with climate change, entanglement in fishing gear and plastic pollution posing the biggest threats., used to help ships navigate and detect objects, according to a review of existing research by Dalhousie University in Canada.
Their deep-sea habitat and reclusive behaviour makes them among the least encountered mammals on the planet, but man-made pollution is still threatening their existence, scientists have said. “Military sonar has been linked to mass strandings in various regions, including the UK . Moreover, the UK’s marine territories are subject to multiple fisheries, traversed by busy shipping lanes and are also areas of interest for oil and gas exploration,”
