Ahead of the release of the Premier League fixtures, our writers share who they would like to see Everton play in the final game at Goodison Park
So, after 2,327 top flight matches – more than any other venue – we’ll find out shortly who Everton will play in Goodison Park’s final game.
I’ll therefore go with a nice bit of symmetry and say Nottingham Forest who were Everton’s first ever League opponents for a 2-2 draw on September 3, 1892. The East Midlanders, who joined neighbours Notts County in the top flight – and would finish above their relegated local rivals in 1892/93 – had won what proved the be the final edition of the Football Alliance the previous season.
Picking a team for that occasion is tough but one I think would be nice would be Aston Villa. Two famous old English giants in one of football’s great stadiums. A game that has been played so often and which can invoke so many memories. I feel that would be a fitting conclusion - and a win would make it even more satisfying. In truth, it doesn't really matter too much does it? The occasion will be special, emotional and intense regardless.
