Dwight McNeil's second season at Everton was one of ups and downs - some supporters believe he would benefit from a new role
After starring in the 2022-23 run-in when Everton eventually pulled clear of relegation trouble, there was a hope that the young winger would be able to press on again.
Looking ahead to next year, a rest and a healthy pre-season will no doubt do McNeil good. The campaign just gone would've taken a physical toll on him, while the personal issues he has had to deal with off the pitch will have had a mental tax too. The flashes of class McNeil showcased in the middle of the pitch prompted a question - could he function more effectively as a No. 10?
Tactically, a move infield may be small in terms of distance, but it still represents a big change. A winger finding space coming off the flank is much more straightforward than finding space when your starting position is in the middle of the pitch. As things stand, McNeil is the only senior wide player at the club. Jack Harrison - who Everton want to bring back - andArnaut Danjuma were only in on loan deals, while Lewis Dobbin still remains on the fringes of the first-team squad.
