The inside track on what makes Everton striker Beto a unique player
Beto might feel like a throwback to Everton centre-forwards of yesteryear but the man who helped him take the first steps on his rapid rise from amateur football to the Premier League believes the player is “unique.” Ever since the club’s record goalscorer Dixie Dean became the game’s first number nine, generations of Evertonians have loved having an aerially-dominant big man spearheading their frontline. Dean’s successor Tommy Lawton was followed by the likes of Dave Hickson, Joe Royle, Bob Latchford, Graeme Sharp and more latterly Duncan Ferguson, who at 6ft 4in the Portuguese striker matches in height.
But it’s not just when he’s attacking crosses – his header which rattled the post on his debut at Doncaster Rovers showed a taste of things to come – that Beto demonstrates his ability to make spectacular leaps. In little over a year between 2018-19, he skyrocketed from regional competition to the top flight in his native Portugal and now he finds himself turning out in the leading domestic club competition in the world.
When he started his career with Uniao Tires, a team located in an unassuming village a dozen miles west of the capital who play in the Lisbon FA’s League, to make ends meet, Beto worked for the fast food restaurant chain KFC but while their Boneless Banquet meal typically retails for £9:79, the 25-year-old striker cost EFC a cool £25.8million.
