More disruption is expected on the roads due to icy conditions after sub-zero temperatures overnight
A number of Met Office weather warnings are in force today as more snow and ice is forecast across much of the UK.
This warning also covers parts of Scotland, the East Midlands, the east of England, parts of the North East and North West, parts of Wales, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber. For areas covered by the warning, the Met Office said: "Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Wednesday evening and overnight into Thursday as temperatures drop below freezing."A few sleet or snow showers are also likely at times, particularly close to coasts.
Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: "A northerly airflow will continue to feed snow showers into Scotland over the next few days, with this reaching lower levels at times and bringing the potential for some travel disruption. Overnight temperatures will drop below zero fairly widely over the next few days, which has resulted in some ice warnings, with further warnings likely through this week.
Insurance and roadside assistance company RAC said on Wednesday that drivers were suddenly facing 'some of the worst road conditions we’ve seen all year' and that a sharp rise in vehicle breakdowns was reported on Wednesday morning as drivers’ batteries failed.
