The former Liverpool player looked at the controversial decision on Monday Night Football

Jamie Carragher has slammed PGMOL's use of VAR during Liverpool's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - insisting the technology is almost at a "crisis point". Luis Diaz wrongly had a goal ruled out in the first half of the 2-1 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook at fault for a communication error which resulted in referee Simon Hooper sticking with the initial on-field decision to rule the goal out.

In the days since, both England and Cook were dropped for their duties for Sunday and Monday's Premier League games while Liverpool released a statement demanding a comprehensive and transparent review into the failings in North London. Speaking on Monday Night Football, former Liverpool defender Carragher took aim at VAR and PGMOL for their handling of the situation and belives it will be difficult for referees chief Howard Webb to emerge from the incident with any credibility.READ MORE: Gary Neville and Liverpool rivals should be careful what they wish forJamie Carragher: "I think VAR has been a topic over the last few years for various reasons. I don’t think the feeling around VAR has ever been lower. This is almost a crisis point for VAR in this country. It’s not just on the back of this decision, it’s what has been happening all season. I don’t want to pile on an official or Howard Webb, I bet they feel absolutely awful. "I am not into the conspiracy theories that a referee favours that team, no one gains anything from this in terms of the officials. We have all been there and made mistakes, but it is a horrendous mistake and you can’t quite believe the explanation that’s been given. The thing I am struggling with is, the mistake has been made, they then know within two seconds. Tottenham have a free-kick and haven’t kicked off. "Seven seconds is a long time, and if you are expecting Tottenham to kick-off, as soon as that pass is made, I know if I am there that something has gone wrong. I know now, it does not take seven seconds to know a major mistake has happened. Okay, some may say they should be shouting at the referee, I’d be screaming at him, but they may say they are waiting for the ball to go out of play. "The ball now goes out of play, nothing significant has happened in the game, it’s been 30 seconds since that incident has happened in the game, it now takes Liverpool 27 seconds for the ball to come back into play, and they are saying they stayed within protocol about not having to stop it, I don’t believe that. "They have absolutely panicked and they have froze. I know it’s the rule, but it’s a red tape rule. There’s talk that the officials don’t know until half-time that a mistake has been made. When the ball goes out, the look on that referee’s face has that look, but I don’t know. It’s a look that says, something has gone wrong here. I think it is unbelievable that all the parties involved have not released the audio. "I find it unfathomable because the only way Howard Webb and the PGMOL will go and gain any credibility on the back of this decision, is to get out there, yes you have admitted the mistake, but the problem they have got now is because the explanation is so random and bizarre, the longer this goes on, the more people will think they are trying to piece a story together." Carragher was also asked for his views on the match potentially being replayed as a result of the error: "They are almost saying it without saying it. I think what they are saying is that they are not closing anything off. We are not happy with the referees, but in the middle bit they are talking about significant human error, and then we are still talking about a review. "How can you call it that when you are still having that review? How long does it take to review and how long is it going to go on, I don’t know. We’re 48 hours after the event, it can’t still be going on. In terms of the bottom statement, you are not quite sure. It looks like Liverpool are after a replay, without actually saying that. "I have never known a football club, especially Liverpool put out a statement on the back of a refereeing decision."
