Disruption caused by strikes and border checks is ongoing throughout the Easter bank holiday weekend
when most schools broke up for the spring holidays, another surge of holidaymakers is under way as travellers head off for the long Easter weekend break.
Strikes are continuing at home and abroad over the weekend, and red-tape related concerns still loom over cross-Channel travel. The Port of Dover is hoping to avoid the coach delays of up to 20 hours that beset travellers last weekend. It expects Easter weekend traffic to be a third lower than the weekend of 1 April. However, there were queues of at least one hour entering the port on Thursday morning.
The projected peak day of travel is expected to be Good Friday, when further delays can be expected. Ferry operators DFDS, Irish Ferries andare working with coach customers to spread travel across the weekend to Saturday. On Thursday, delays to P&O departures were minimal. The Port installed temporary border control infrastructure as a contingency measure for coach processing to avoid the delays of last weekend. French border control will be fully staffed throughout the weekend.
Despite the ongoing delays, passengers are advised not to arrive early for sailings and have been instructed that if they miss their ferry, they will be put on the next available departure.
