Students in lockdown zones will have to wear masks in corridors and other communal spaces

When asked by a parent about deaf children who rely on lip reading to communicate, the PM said the Government ‘don’t want to see face masks in the classroom’.

‘The evidence on face coverings is not very strong in either direction. We are continuing to learn as the Prime Minister has said around how the virus transmits and it may be we do change advice in the future, that’s because we’re watching the science. If a coronavirus case is confirmed, every pupil in the affected person’s class, or ‘bubble’, may have to quarantine for two weeks, it added.

He added: ‘However, it is important that both Government and schools prepare for a worst case scenario, so this framework represents the sensible contingency planning any responsible government would put in place.’But school leaders criticised the timing of the announcement, which came on Friday evening just before the bank holiday weekend, with millions of pupils returning to class next week for autumn term.
