A former detective has suggested police conduct high-visibility patrols and intercept suspicious cars following a violent armed robbery of a teenage schoolboy in Melbourne.

It is understood at least two offenders in a dark grey Volkswagen confronted a 14-year-old boy on Monday about 3:35pm in Melbourne's south-east suburb of Glen Huntly.

The boy, believed to be a student of the school, a short time later came out of the vehicle at the nearby intersection of Grange Rd while it was still moving. "It's all good and well to say to parents about being vigilant, even the schools, but what it really needs is a mass input by a visible police presence saturating the area when these things happen," he told Seven's Sunrise on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au that officers were"working closely with the school and there will be an increased presence in the vicinity of the incident".appeared to be a random attack on an"innocent victim on his way home from school"Police are hoping to speak with the teenage boy once he feels better, as they try to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
