'I said 'what are you kidnapping me?' They said 'no, you are going to have to be de-controlled'. What do you mean de-controlled?'
Radio DJ and ex-Coronation Street actor Craig Charles has told of his 'secret' escape from Manchester Airport through 'hidden little passageways' after his early morning flight was cancelled amid Sunday's power cut chaos.
The outage, which hit the airport in the early hours, threw the travel plans of thousands of passengers into turmoil as flights out of Terminals 1 and 2 were cancelled 'until further notice'. Passengers were told to stay away due to the widespread disruption. "I knew something was wrong when all the elevators didn't work, all the escalators didn't work, and there's a lot of steps at Manchester Airport, and then the walking walkways weren't working either."
"'Oh, your can't leave Mr Charles'. I said 'what do you mean I can't leave?' You can't leave the airport. I said 'what are you kidnapping me?' They said 'no, you are going to have to be de-controlled'. What do you mean de-controlled?""I said 'no, I'll just go downstairs'." Charles said a TUI representative then took him through 'hidden little passageways at the airport'. "The secret airport," he said.
In a statement on its website today TUI said: ”We would like to apologise to everyone impacted by the power outage that took place at Manchester Airport on Sunday 23rd June. We are pleased to confirm that every effort is being taken so customers can go their holiday as planned, and we have not cancelled any flights.
Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport's managing director, said there had been 'a big power spike' in the airport's electrical system due to 'a failure'. "That's damaged some really key equipment for our departure security and our departures baggage systems," he added.
