MP Kenny MacAskill has made the calls after the death of a Stagecoach driver following an alleged assault in Elgin on Saturday, February 2.

Scotland's former Justice Secretary has called for a crackdown on disorderly youths who use free public transport.

Dougie Maguire, Unite regional coordinator said: "There is no doubt that the introduction of free travel for young people has coincided with an increase in attacks towards drivers on buses and at bus stations. This is an unavoidable fact." But MacAskill argues that the problem with youth disorder is a result of young people being left with nowhere to go in their communities after the pandemic and brutal council budget cuts closing their centres and clubs. And he is backing the Daily Record's Our Kids ... Our Future campaign which has called on the Scottish Government to invest in community resources for young people after we reported on a spate of violent attacks involving children across the country.

MacAskill also told how several vital bus routes in his own constituency were cancelled last year after a spate of assaults on staff involving teens. The Record reported last year that Scotrail staff were experiencing similar issues with increased disorder on trains. A driver warned at the time that railways were becoming like "mobile gang huts" as teenagers congregated in carriages and at stations with nowhere else to go.

“I’m not blaming the kids. When their services and clubs were taken away, they were left with nothing else and nowhere else to go. They want to see their pals and stay warm, so of course they’re going to gather on trains and in train stations.
