A former rugby league player who grew up in Bankstown dreaming of an NRL career before moving to the United States to try his hand at American football in 2018 is on the brink of a Super Bowl Championship.
Chris Orr, Mailata’s agent, suggested pursuing the NFL’s International Pathway Program but his parents and sister were concerned about him travelling overseas.
Mailata travelled to the US in 2018 to take part in the IPP which was established just a year earlier and designed to provide elite international athletes with an opportunity to compete in the NFL. Jeff Stoutland, the Eagles offensive line coach, was asked to watch Mailata in action at the IPP and he admitted he “was not interested” because he had another trip planned but he was persuaded to go and watch his pro-day.
