Updated: May. 13, 2024, 11:08 a.m.Former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder speaks to reporters outside the federal courthouse in Cincinnati on Thursday March 9, 2023, after he was found guilty of racketeering. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The arraignment of former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder was postponed Monday in a case stemming from the House Bill 6 scandal.
The charges accuse the southern Ohio politician of illegally using hundreds of thousands of dollars from his campaign contributors to pay for Cleveland attorneys Mark Marein, Steve Bradley and Rob Glickman, who defended him last year in a federal bribery trial. Yost’s office says Householder also lied on state ethics forms about his use of the funds.
FirstEnergy Corp. and its subsidiaries contributed more than $60 million to a political nonprofit that authorities said Householder controlled. In exchange, Householder pushed for a $1.3 billion legislative bailout of two power plants that had been owned by a subsidiary of the Akron utility, federal prosecutors said.
Yost’s office also filed charges in Summit County Common Pleas Court against former FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones and former Vice President Michael Dowling over their roles in the scheme tied to Householder. They have pleaded not guilty.
