As ITV's Mr Bates vs The Post Office continues to dominate headlines after bringing the Horizon scandal to light, OK! takes a look at inside the scandal as Paula Vennells hands back her CBE
ITV mini-series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, based on the real life story of the Horizon scandal, is back in the news today after former Post Office boss Paula Vennells broke down in tears.
What was the Post Office scandal? The scandal first arose when the Post Office began using a new computer system called Horizon. The software began causing accounting errors and wrongfully declared hundreds of subpostmasters as being in a deficit. This meant their accounts didn’t balance out and alleged that money was missing.
Speaking to The Guardian, Vivienne Hammond opened up about how her husband Dennis died before his name could be cleared. Meanwhile, Martin Griffiths, was pursued by the Post Office for alleged shortfalls of £60,000. Many are still waiting to receive compensation. Lee, who is played by Will Mellor in the drama, said: "The empathy and the understanding and the feeling that he brings to the part. I am very grateful for that and I am very humbled.
"I have no sense that there was any conspiracy at all. My deep sorrow in this is that I think that individuals, myself included, made mistakes, they didn’t see things and hear things."
