May 23, 2024.In his four years as president of Rutgers University, Jonathan Holloway has scored a string of huge wins, climbing steadily in the national rankings, raising record donations and research funds, and lifting admissions standards as thousands more kids compete to enroll. Even the football team is winning.
We talk a lot about how our leaders fail us, and that’s certainly true. But it’s not the end of the story. As a country, we also need to think long and hard about how we treat our leaders. Because if the public space remains so toxic, and if we are so resolute about our differences, we are going to lose more good leaders like Holloway.

Protesters supporting the unions besieged his home, requiring campus police to lock the gates and post a squad car out front. And they insisted that Holloway accept a police escort.
As for his legacy, he says Rutgers is drawing so much research money that it’s on the verge of entering “the billion-dollar club” of large and elite schools that score that much in a single year. The school is massive and has grown, with 67,000 students, 27,000 employees, and a budget of $5.6 billion.of public universities, up from #23 when he arrived in 2020. Research funding climbed to $970 million last year, up 40 percent.
