On Monday September 16, 2020, Laura Langley texted a friend and said she was 'exhausted'
A seven-week-old baby died after being squeezed so hard that 30 of her ribs were broken, a court heard today .
Today, Langley denied murder and child cruelty at Preston Crown Court. Opening the trial, Timothy Cray KC, prosecuting, said Edith was born on September 3, 2020 and had raised no concerns with doctors or health visitors who had met her at her home. After finishing a bottle of wine, Langley called upon a friend to bring her another bottle of sauvignon and a packet of cigarettes 'on the meter' in his minicab. Mr Cray said: "Let's make it clear, this case is not about criticising mothers of newborns that drink, but drink may have been a factor in with everything else, trying to black out what was going on and taken before 999 was called.
Following her death, Preston Crown Court was told Langley gave different accounts of what had happened to police officers and family members. In March 2022 she was questioned again and denied deliberately hurting, or wanting to hurt her child, but said she may caused injury by rolling on Edith as she slept.
